This calculator assumes direct wheel speed from RPM and tire diameter. It does not account for gear ratio, final drive, or tire slip unless those are already reflected in the RPM you enter.

How the RPM speed calculator works

Vehicle speed and wheel RPM are linked by the distance a tire travels in one revolution. If you know the tire diameter and RPM, the calculator converts that rotation into road speed. If you know road speed, it can work backward to estimate RPM.

RPM to speed formula

speed in mph = RPM × tire circumference in inches × 60 ÷ 63,360

tire circumference = π × diameter

Example

With a 26 inch tire turning at 2,500 RPM, the direct wheel speed is about 48.7 mph.

In a real vehicle, engine RPM is also affected by the selected gear and final drive ratio, so engine RPM cannot be converted to road speed accurately without those ratios.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use engine RPM directly?

Only when the RPM represents wheel RPM or when the gearing has already been accounted for. For engine RPM, include the transmission and final drive ratios in a more complete drivetrain calculation.

Does tire diameter matter?

Yes. A larger tire travels farther per revolution, so it produces a higher road speed at the same wheel RPM.

Is this an exact vehicle speed calculator?

It is a mathematical estimate based on tire diameter and RPM. Real speed can differ because of tire growth, slip, measurement error, and drivetrain gearing.
